Kainos Coffee – Portland OR

Kainos Coffee

Kainos Coffee is a unique coffee shop in Portland, Oregon, and a nearby suburb, The Dalles. It was founded in 2015 by two lifelong friends, Austin Roberts and Martin Boyden. Their shared years of friendship extend to their experience prior to opening Kainos Coffee as well, with each of them having entered the coffee industry by working in Austin, Texas.

They Are Working On Staying Open Through Late-Night Hours

One goal Kainos is gradually implementing comes from that experience; that being their move towards staying open through late-night hours. Currently, their location in The Dalles remains open till 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays, but it is a work in progress.

Their hours, which otherwise range from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Portland location and on Sunday through Wednesday at The Dalles, are by no means their most unique facet.

Some of Their Coffee Profits Help Children in the Philippines

Kainos Coffee is in fact a hybrid coffee shop/charity. Twenty-one percent of their profits go to their current charity partnership with the LifeChild Asia Foundation. This benefits children in the Philippines, providing them homes and schooling.

It makes sense that they would choose to support this cause after their own visits to witness the ways of life in those areas, but their charitable efforts go even further.

They Also Support Local Charities

Kainos partners with local charities as well, such as Cupcake Girls, who benefit victims of sexual assault and sex-trafficing, and in general, Kainos donates their products to businesses and events in the surrounding area.

Was Once a Bike Powered Roasting Business

Occasionally, they put on events themselves, like the run they sponsored where they gave free coffee to participants. Kainos has two locations currently, though it originated as a bike-powered roasting business and coffee cart.

Amidst the upgrades, their cafes now support a normal roasting operation and serve cold brew, americanos, lattes, mochas, cappuccinos, and their uniquely named black coffees, served in drip or pour-over styles.

Don’t Forget to Try Their Homemade Flavors

The “Freakin’ Yum” is their main blend, touting chocolatey and citrus notes, but all of their beverages can be paired with their homemade additional flavors such as vanilla, bourbon maple, and coconut nectar.

The Decor is Modern and Each Location Exhibits a Colorful Mural

Kainos Coffee cafes are mostly standard, modern coffee shops, with whites and woods, but a particular standout aspect at each was painted by Mary Boyden, wife of the co-owner, Martin. One wall in each cafe features a colorful, geometrically patterned mural.

Then, there is the sign near the ordering-counter than says “You drink, kids eat,” a nod to what customers are supporting with their purchases. Support Kainos Coffee and their charitable efforts by visiting them at either of their 2 locations
